I started preparing GRE of my own. But a blog in a website tells ‘One have to pursue coaching for GRE to get high marks’ . . . Is it needed? If self-study is Okay, then what are the materials I have to go through . . . ? Also tell me the internet resources for preparing well . . :)

In a few weeks, I graduate with a B.A. in International Relations and a minor in Music from UW~Milwaukee. I have nearly a full music degree. My GPA right now is on the brink of a 3.0 ~ a single course grade difference between an A and a B will make the difference between a 3.02 and a 2.998 (thereabouts).

So here’s my problem:

I’m a double major in history and International Studies who recently got accepted to CSU Fresno’s International Relations program (Masters). However, I only applied to 2 schools: UCSD and Fresno State. My GPA was 2.8 with GRE scores of 610 in quantitative, 580 in qualitative, and 4.0 in analytical. Therefore, I’m thinking it’s not very hard to get into Fresno State. After doing some research and finding that it’s not a very stellar school (and school name is somewhat important in the field of International Relations) and that the city of Fresno is crime-ridden (and the school is in the worst part of town), I’m not sure I really want to go there anymore. So I’m thinking I should take a year off and work on internships to get experience and then apply again, but this time to a lot more schools. I know I could easily into Fresno State again as a safety school. What should I do? On a side-note, I’m sure parents won’t be very thrilled if they find out I’m turning down a sure thing.

I am curious how much people feel I should study for a GRE exam? I don’t know much about the exam, but it seems similar to the SAT. I took the SAT 4 years ago and got a 1400/1600 (older version of it, obviously) with a 640/800 on the SAT II for Writing.

I’m looking to get in to grad school within the next year or so, and I’m petrified to take the GRE. I’m also on a limited income, and these tests don’t come cheap. Therefore, the option of registering for the test over and over and trying to raise my score each time isn’t the most tangible choice. I have the Barron’s study guide as well as the flash cards which i’ve been reviewing.

I attend a little-known state school, but I am doing some advanced research in mathematics as an undergraduate. I intend to engage in a senior honors project in algebraic geometry, and I typically get above an 840 on the math GRE practice. I intend to pursue PhD studies in math, but I am inhibited by my low gpa (3.75–trust me, it’s terrible for a math PhD applicant in math who isn’t from a great school).
